Dark brown is “having a moment,” and I’m here for it!
If you’ve been looking for an alternative to the usual highlights or blonde balayage, this season’s rich browns may help add some variety to your look. I think brown is often an underrated color, and can look very chic and elegant.
While we tend to think of brown as a “warm” color, there is a dark brown for every seasonal palette. Whether you want something cool like mushroom brown or a warmer cappuccino, here are a few of my picks for the season.
1. Cappuccino

Wait… did someone say coffee? I’m listening.
Cappuccino hair color is a rich golden shade of brown that is honestly just chef’s kiss. It features creamy gold highlights that make the look pop.
2. Really Dark Brown

This is the darkest shade of brown hair color you can get. I’m talking almost black here.
You can typically achieve this moody look with a level 2 shade of brown hair color.
3. Mushroom Brown

This is one of the more popular shades of brown hair color right now, and for good reason. It’s a multi-dimensional variation of neutral brown that features ashy highlights and lowlights.
As you can probably guess, this color should typically mimic the underside of a mushroom.
4. Golden Brown

Golden brown hair has golden undertones that look like they were spun from beautiful golden silk.
Although it’s warm like chocolate brown, the base color here is actually yellow.
5. Chocolate Cherry

Isn’t this just one of the most beautiful shades of brown hair in the entire world? I absolutely love how it combines cherry red hair with chocolate brown.
In fact, it kinda sits right in the middle of those two colors, making it a fun and exciting way to add a ton of warmth to brown hair.
6. Ash Brown

When you hear color being referred to as “ash,” it really just means that it has a blue base color.
In other words, ash brown is brown hair color with a blueish undertone, and it might even tend to look like a dark brownish-grey.
Although grey hair might not flatter everyone, the ash tones have been pretty popular for the past few years.
7. Bronde

Is it brown? Is it blonde? The world will never know. Bronde hair is a combination of brown and blonde hair color; it should typically sit right in between the two.
It’s the perfect way for brunettes to add subtle pops of blonde to their hair without the commitment.
8. Cinnamon

Cinnamon hair is a spicy brown color that is full of dimensional highlights.
To create this look, simply add red and ginger highlights to a reddish-brown base color.
9. Rose Brown

I don’t know about you, but I’m obsessed with rose gold anything.
Although this isn’t the same thing as rose gold hair, rose brown hair has a brown base and rosy gold highlights throughout the head.
It’s a fun way to add warmth to your brown hair without the red undertones.
10. Auburn

Auburn is also a shade of red hair color (it’s really just a mixture of red and brown) and could even be on the orangey side.
It should look pretty natural and be browner than it is red.
11. Chocolate Brown

Is there really much to explain here? The name kinda says it all. Chocolate brown hair color is a rich, decadent shade that resembles my personal favorite vice… milk chocolate.
You can achieve this look with a level 4-5 brown with warm reddish undertones.
12. Light Brown

“Light brown” really has to do with the level of hair color.
Technically, it can have any other undertone, as long as it’s a level 6 or 7. Added highlights are a fun way to make it pop.
13. Mahogany

Like auburn, mahogany can also be considered to be a shade of red.
However, this is a darker, rich reddish-brown color with more red pigment than brown. It should resemble mahogany wood.
